Unlike gastric ulcers, a scope cannot identify ulcers in a horse’s hindgut. 

There are a few advanced techniques available for diagnosis (ie. ultra sound thermo imaging), however these options are quite expensive. Instead, most vets make a presumptive diagnosis based on symptoms and commence treatment accordingly.
